Smokey Quartz is a member of the Quartz family and of the trigonal crystal system. It is transparent, translucent and sometimes opaque. It ranges from a very light brown to deep brown color and grey. A black or very dark brown variety of Smokey Quartz is called Morion Quartz. The color is from gamma irradiation and can be natural or artificially irradiated. Smokey Quartz scores a 7 on the Mohs Hardness scale.
