Emerald is a green variety of Beryl from the hexagonal crystal system. It has a MOHs hardness of 7.5 - 8 and streaks white. It gets its beautiful green coloring from chromium or sometimes vanadium. The gemstone variety of Emerald is one that is often faked or enhanced, so be careful of that. Technically, true Emerald is the beautiful transparent gemstone, whereas the lighter green, less translucent, is Green Beryl. It's the same material, just different quality.
