MOSS AGATE and TREE AGATE (JASPER)

The Growth Stone

Agate is a mineral of the Quartz group. It is a fibrous banded chalcedony that is typically translucent. Agate comes in a variety of colors and has a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7. There are many types of Agates and their names are often based on their location, patterns, or colors. Both Moss and Tree Agates are technically not Agates because they do not have banding, however Moss Agate is included in the Agate group. Tree Agate is technically a Jasper but for some reason, it's referred to as Tree Agate on the market. There may be some confusion between Moss Agate and Tree Agate.

Moss Agate often has green inclusions within a milky or clear, semi-translucent Quartz. They may also have some bluish green and even some red or brown colors. The dendritic inclusions are moss or lichen-like. Below are some examples of tumbled Moss Agate, including a beautiful carved heart.

Tree Agate is typically white, opaque Quartz with green inclusions. The dendritic inclusions are green and have a branching out pattern. Technically, Tree Agate is not an Agate. It's Jasper. However for sake of continuity, I use the term Tree Agate. Below are samples of tumbled and rough Tree Agates, as well as a lovely egg in nest.

Although Moss and Tree Agates are not the exact same minerals, I find them to be similar in vibration and metaphysical properties. Metaphysically speaking, it is said that Agates tend to have a slow-pace type of energy and generally promote grounding, stability, harmony, and mental clarity. Other metaphysical properties of Moss and Tree Agate may include:

  • Growth
  • Connection with nature
  • Re-birth and new beginnings
  • Manifestation
  • Overall wellness
  • Good luck and opportunities
  • Nurturing and comfort
  • Associated with the heart and root chakras
  • A stone for plants, trees, flowers, and agriculture
