Not all residents in the day room actively participate in group activities, therefore it is important to offer Parallel Programming. Parallel Programming is a technique which offers residents who are not participating in the scheduled activity, the opportunity to engage in individualized activity for diversion and stimulation. It can be provided in a group or one to one basis.
Parallel Program Examples:
• Manipulatives or sensory items/equipment
• Puzzles or Table Games
• Reading Materials
• Play music
• Manicures/hand massage
• Task Activities (rolling yarn, folding laundry, sorting, etc.)
• Or any type of activity the resident would enjoy
Parallel Program Tips:
• Group/seat residents according to functional abilities and interests
• Provide activities that meet the interests and abilities of the residents
• Utilize supplies in dayroom; return when finished
• Encourage resident independence
• Adapt activities and/or use adapted equipment
