Leisure Education, a component of Therapeutic Recreation, is a therapeutic modality that targets individuals with various disabilities. The focus of Leisure Education is to develop and/or enhance leisure awareness, social interaction skills, leisure resources, and/or leisure activity skills to increase an individual’s quality of life. Here are some simple ways to transform traditional activities into a leisure education session!
Leisure Bingo: Turn your traditional Bingo into a Leisure or Recreation Bingo. Create a blank card with 25 squares or for larger squares, make cards with 16 squares. Create on the computer or by hand. Write in a variety of different activities such as bingo, crafts, music, exercise, word games, church, gardening, computers, etc.
Activity A-Z: Name words that begin with each letter of the alphabet based on a recreation/leisure theme. Play individually or as a team. Creativity is often a must for letters X,Y,Z. Sample words: A=Archery, B=Baseball, C=Crafts, D=Dancing, etc.
Recreation Anagram: On a large piece of paper, dry erase board, poster board, etc. write a word related to leisure such as “Recreation”. Have participants make as many small words as they can without repeating letter. Play as individuals or as teams.
